Public transport in Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve and night
All GVB buses, trams, metro and ferries in Amsterdam run on a normal timetable until 20:00 on New Year’s Eve (31 December 2026), then stop for the rest of the evening.
On New Year’s night, the night buses from Amsterdam Centraal Station depart from the bus platform on the IJ side from 1:30. A number of night buses will follow an adjusted route. You can find more information at GVB.nl.
Metro on New Year’s Night. Metro line 52 will run in both directions between Station Noord and Station Zuid from 01:30. Metro line 54 will run in both directions between Amsterdam Centraal Station and Gein from 01:30. The other metro lines will start at 07:00 and run according to the Sunday timetable.
Please note: Amstel Station will be closed on New Year’s Eve. Metro 54 will therefore not stop at this station. All passageways at Centraal Station will be closed from 20:00. You can use the Cuyperspassage bicycle and pedestrian tunnel between the IJ side (rear) and the Stationsplein (front).
Public transport in Amsterdam on New Year’s Day
On Sunday, 1 January 2027 the GVB timetable starts at 01:30. This applies to all GVB night buses, metro lines 52 and 54. A ticket for the night bus in 2027 costs € 5,40. Trains around Amsterdam on New Year’s Eve and Day
On New Year’s Eve (31 December 2026) there will also be no trains after 20:00. Train service resumes on New Year’s Day around 10:00.
Trains between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Centraal run until 22:00. From 1:00 on 1 January 2027 the night network runs Rotterdam Centraal, Delft, The Hague Hollands Spoor, Leiden Centraal, Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam Centraal and Utrecht Centraal, with additional stops at Amsterdam Bijlmer and Amsterdam Sloterdijk.
As in previous years, night trains run between Haarlem and Amsterdam, and Zaandam also has a night connection to Amsterdam. Around Utrecht Centraal, Intercity trains to Eindhoven Centraal, Arnhem Centraal and Amersfoort Centraal/Zwolle start extra early.
Early Sprinters to Schiphol Airport (arriving before 6:00 am) from The Hague, Lelystad, Amersfoort Centraal, Alkmaar and Hoorn continue to run on the morning of 1 January 2027. Check the confirmed timetable at NS.nl closer to the date.

Trains and buses to Schiphol airport
There are no trains to Schiphol Airport between 22:00 and 02:00 on New Year’s Eve. Most trains resume from 02:00, with services to Leiden Centraal resuming from 01:00.
On 31 December 2026, buses to and from Schiphol, including the Amsterdam Airport Express (bus 397), stop running after 20:00. They start again on 1 January 2027, operating on a Sunday timetable.
International trains
Extra domestic trains run from Amersfoort Centraal to Amsterdam Centraal shortly before and after the Intercity Berlin from Friday 20 December to Thursday 31 December 2026. Expect minor departure-time or platform changes on this route.
