How to travel to Volendam from Amsterdam by bus

To reach Volendam and Marken by public transport, take bus line 316, which departs from the Amsterdam/CS IJzijde station. The bus station is located just behind Amsterdam Centraal train station, one level up from platforms 14 and 15.

Rent a car in the Netherlands and explore the Dutch countryside at your own pace. Take the A10 ring road in the direction of Zaandam/Zaanstad. From there, follow the N247 towards Volendam. To reach the center of Volendam, continue on the N517 road.

How to travel from Volendam to Marken: by ferry boat or bus in 2026

One of the nicest ways to travel from Volendam to Marken is by ferry boat. The Volendam-Marken Express operates a ferry service year-round, except when the lake is frozen.

Alternatively, you can travel from Volendam to Marken by bus. Take bus line 316 (heading towards Amsterdam) and get off at the Broek in Waterland, Dorp bus stop. This charming village is also worth a visit!

My tip! If you have time for a relaxed lunch or dinner with a view, Smit Bokkum, an eel restaurant just outside the busy tourist area. It’s my favourite place to eat in Volendam. Many locals travel from different parts of the Netherlands to dine here, so be sure to make a reservation in advance.

Can I visit Volendam and the Zaanse Schans in one day?

Yes, it’s possible. However, if you look at the map, you’ll notice that Volendam and Marken are located in different directions from Amsterdam. If you’re traveling by public transport, you’ll need to go via Amsterdam, which can take over an hour.

For more convenience, we recommend joining a bus tour to the Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken. This 6-hour tour also includes a ferry boat ride across the IJsselmeer from Volendam to Marken.
