What is the best time to see the Dutch tulip fields near Amsterdam? And there to find them? Are there tulip field tours? The best place to see tulips relatively close from Amsterdam is the Bollenstreek area (the Flower Bulb Region), which includes places like Lisse, Hillegom, Noordwijkerhout, Noordwijk.

It’s also the area where the Keukenhof park are located in the Netherlands. So it’s good idea to combine your trip to the Dutch tulip fields with a visit to Keukenhof (in 2026 open from March 19 till May 10). Book your Keukenhof tickets before they sell out.

When is it the best time to see the tulips near Amsterdam?

The flowering period of the Dutch fields depends on the weather. But usual blooming times for the flower in the Netherlands are:

  • daffodil fields – from mid-March till mid-April
  • hyacinth fields – from the beginning of April till end of April
  • tulip fields – from mid-April till early May

Explore the Dutch tulip fields by bike

One of the best ways to explore the flower flowers is by bike. You can book a guided bike tour (from €49,50).

You can also rent a bike near the Keukenhof entrance and explore the fields yourself. Here are a few nice cycling routes in the area.

Is it allowed to take photos in tulip fields?

Actually it’s not allowed to enter the flower fields. But can make beautiful photos from outside, or visit special farms:

Is it allowed to enter tulip fields in the Netherlands?

No. The tulip fields in Bollensteek are owned by flower bulb growers. And the bulbs need to be healthy and undamaged. Walking through the fields may spread plant diseases and lead to a financial damage for the growers.

It’s also not allowed to pick flowers in the fields. But you can buy them at a very reasonable price in small tents along the road. You can also visit special tulip-picking farms (pluktuinen) in the area like The Tulip Barn, De Tulperij, or Pluktuin Noordwijkerhout.

Tulip Barn, on the other hand, focuses more on Instagram photos, with plenty of photo set ups throughout the fields.

I want to explore tulip fields and the area, but I cannot bike. What can I do?

You can take a tour to Tulip Experience with transportation from Amsterdam. It can also be combined with a Keukenhof visit. Also, if you can drive, it’s possible to rent a small electro car with fixed route GPS navigation for two persons near Keukenhof and explore the area by car.
