Flower market in Amsterdam, also called Bloemenmarkt in Dutch, or Floating market is one of the most colourful attractions in Amsterdam. It’s the city’s iconic landmarks operating since 1862. Today some consider it to be too touristic, because of the large amounts of souvenirs being sold here and lots of foreign people coming to visit. But you will be surprised how many locals also come to the Bloemenmarkt to get a bunch of fresh flowers for their homes.

What to buy and not to buy at the Amsterdam Flower market?
At the Bloemenmarkt you will find a good selection of typical Dutch souvenirs. The prices are reasonable, so it’s a good place to buy some presents to take home.
It’s also the right place to buy fresh flowers. There are not that many flower pavilions here as some travellers expect. But you definitely won’t leave empty-handed.

But be aware: most of the bulbs sold at the Bloemenmarkt don’t flower! You can buy better quality flower bulbs at the garden centers (Google for a tuincentrum in your neighbourhood) or the Keukenhof gardens.

A typical visit to the Flower Market in Amsterdam takes around 45 minutes. The market itself is only about 200 meters long, so it’s relatively compact.
For a first-time visitor, the Bloemenmarkt is worth seeing because it’s unique and centrally located. Just go in expecting a scenic, tourist-oriented stop rather than a bustling local flower market.
In many cases you can take tulip bulbs home from Amsterdam, but it depends on which country you’re returning to. In some countries (such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the UK) rules are stricter because bulbs can carry plant pests and diseases. We recommend checking the specific import rules for your country.
