Are there any museums in Amsterdam that would you recommend pre-booking tickets for? We hear this question a lot from travelers. While most of us want to keep our plans flexible, the answer is yes, many of Amsterdam’s most popular museums strongly recommend or even require pre-booking.
Which Amsterdam museums should you pre-book in 2026?
Pre-booking is required at the Van Gogh Museum and and Anne Frank House, and strongly recommended at the Rijksmuseum. Tickets for the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House are only sold online.
Tip! It’s also important to know when to book your tickets.
Tickets are only available on the official website — no third-party sellers. Released every Tuesday at 10:00 AM Amsterdam time for the week six weeks later. Sell out within hours.
Prices are for 2026. Click each museum to see tickets and booking options.
Prices are verified on 22 June 2026.

There is a chance that you will see that Van Gogh museum tickets are sold out for your selected dates. If that’s the case, we recommend to consider booking a semi-private guided tour or a guided tour to the Van Gogh museum. They include the entrance tickets.

Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum requires a pre-booked timed entry ticket, even if you already have a Dutch Museum card or I amsterdam City Card.
You need to pre-book a timeslot for the Rijksmuseum, even if you literally do that in front of the entrance.
We recommended to book the Rijksmuseum tickets at least 2-3 days in advance. While the museum itself is large and can host lots of visitors, some time slots, especially during weekends, holidays and special exhibitions, are limited and are likely to sell out.

Recently, the museum has started releasing extra tickets for the week immediately following the Tuesday release. If you don’t see tickets for the next week, don’t give up. Keep refreshing until at least 10:30 AM to check for any additional availability.

We also recommend visiting:
- The Dutch Resistance Museum which focuses on broader wartime experiences and resistance
- The National Holocaust Museum which provides a specific view on the persecution of Jews in the Netherlands during World War II.
Both museums offer valuable insights into this critical period of history and are located less than one kilometer away from each other.

Most of Amsterdam’s museum offer a possibility to book tickets in advance. If you are planning to visit Madame Tussauds museum, Moco museum and the Rembrandt house, we recommend booking tickets a few days ahead. Tip! You can also often get discount if you book tickets online.
