De Wallen, Amsterdam’s red-light district, is the most vibrant and internationally known part of the city. Red Light District rules: what is legal and what is not?
1. Starting from 25 May 2023 cannabis smoking ban came into effect in the Red Light District, Dam Square, the Damrak and the Nieuwenmarkt in Amsterdam. From now on you’re not allowed to smoke marijuana in public here. Potential fine for smoking cannabis is € 100. But you can still smoke weed in the numerous coffeeshops in this area.

2. Keep in mind that the Red light district is not a tourist attraction, but a neighborhood where local people actually live and work. You are welcome to visit, but treat them with respect, like you would like to be treated. Don’t sit on private stairs of the houses or make noise.
3. It is strictly forbidden to take photos or video of sex workers. If you try to take a photo, the women and their bodyguards can become very aggressive and destroy your phone.
4. It’s not allowed to drink alcohol out in public spaces, you risk getting a fine of € 95.
5. You cannot leave trash in the streets or canals, there is also a fine for that.
6. Be respectful to the women, don’t tap on the windows, don’t stare or stay near the window for too long.
7. Watch out for pickpockets. The Red light disctict this is a crowded area, especially in the evening. And it attracts different kind of people, with different intentions.
Is Prostitution Legal in the Netherlands?
Yes, prostitution is legal in the Netherlands since 2000, with the exception of street prostitution. Today prostitution is regarded as an official profession. The prostitutes pay taxes, rent and follow regulations like people in any other job.
